Android OS upgrade version from 7 to 9 and from 8 to 10

Hi, when I want to upgrade android os on my phone from version 7 to 9, do I need to first upgrade it to 8 and then to 9 ? Or I can upgrade straight from 7 to 9. How does the upgrade work when upgrading from version 8 to 10 ?

On android phones you usually receive a notification when software updates are available. It is also possible to check manually if there are some updates available for your phone, in Settings > Software update > Download and install. Software updates are installed one by one as they were released. When you would like for example upgrade Android 7 Nougat to Android 9 Pie, you have to download and install software updates one by one. So first you have to upgrade to Android 8 Oreo and then to Android 9 Pie.
