Difference between Rum, Rhum and Ron - is it the same ?

What is the difference between Rum, Rhum and Ron ? Are these different names for the same alcohol ?

Rum, Rhum and Ron are not the same alcohol drinks. All of them are sugarcane based, but Rhum and Ron are not simple another terms used for Rum.

Rhum and Ron may be called as variations of Rum, because there are differences in the production.

The origin of term Rum is English. Rhum is the French spelling of rum. Ron is a Spanish term.

The differences between Rum, Rhum and Ron are mainly in production and also in locations, where they are traditionally produced. Rhum and Ron are the different styles of Rum.

  • Rum - is a molasses-based drink. Molasses is a product of the sugarcane refining process. Popular rums come from Jamaica, Barbados, Virgin Islands and St. Lucia.
  • Rhum - is known as Rhum Agricole. It is made from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice, meaning it is less processed than typical rum. Popular production locations are Martinique, Haiti, Réunion and Guadeloupe.
  • Ron - is made by fermenting molasses. It tends to be lighter in flavor. Popular production locations are Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Panama.
