Unable to install Chrome or Firefox web browser on Windows 11

Hello,

For some reason I am unable to install Chrome or Firefox web browser on my laptop with Windows 11. When I try to install a software I get a notification:

For security and performance this mode of Windows only runs Microsoft-verified apps.

What should I do to allow the installation of these applications ?

The notification "For security and performance, this mode of Windows only runs Microsoft-verified apps." means the same as "For security and performance, this mode of Windows only runs verified apps from the Store." in Windows 10. The reason why you can't install every software is partially explained in the notification.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 can be used in a multiple versions or modes. When you see this notification, it means you have a Windows with S mode enabled. To increase security and performance, S mode allows to install only applications from the Microsoft Store, so it requires to use Microsoft Edge for a safe web browsing.

But you can turn off the S mode if you want. Then you will be able to install also an other software. Switching out of S mode is one-way. If you turn off the S mode, you won't be able to go back to Windows in S mode.

To turn off the Windows S mode, you have to:
1. Go to Settings > System > Activation.
2. Click on Go to the Store
3. In Switch out of S mode section, click on Get
4. You should see a notification "You have switched out of S mode and can now install Apps from outside the Store"
